Spinal Cord Compression

One of the most sensitive parts of our body is the spinal cord because once it’s injured our whole body movement will be affected. There’s a huge possibility that we won’t be able to do our job effectively when it is fractured or we are experiencing spinal cord compression. This happens when an individual had an accident, falls, or if it takes too much of alcohol, diseases, and injuries from sports or recreation.

It also happens when an individual is experiencing too much pressure on its spinal cord, which could be the result of grown cancer or tumor. Whether it is benign or malignant it will still affect your spinal cord. You are also at risk when your bone is starting to get weak and if it is infected because of previous surgery. This is a serious problem that an individual must not ignore because it could result for your body not to perform effectively when doing activities.
When there’s a pressure on the spinal cord the nerves stops and this result for you to experience the spinal cord compression symptoms. We all are at risk of experiencing it but those with cancer have higher chance of acquiring the problem. The symptoms that you’ll feel will depend on the area of your spinal cord where there’s too much pressure on it. The most common symptoms that an individual will experience, is when it feels pain on top or at the middle part of its back. You can also determine it if you are experiencing severe pain at the lower part of your back. If you find it hard to go to sleep at night because of back pain you might also be at risks.

Once you feel this kind of spinal cord problem the first thing that you must do is to visit your doctor. Do not hesitate to take the first step and tell your doctor of what you feel. For sure there are few tests that you need to go through and it is important that you cooperate with what the doctor want you to do. Rapid treatment is necessary to avoid permanent damage on the spinal cord that will surely cost you. Treatment could be done through corticosteroid therapy, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and palliative care. As a first aid process the patient should stay in bed once the pain is experienced and if the pain gets worst you need to immediately undergo MRI scan. This should be done within 24 hours once the pain is felt and become extreme.

To avoid spinal cord compression to worsen always take precautionary actions when you start to feel the pain. Know what you should do and you should consult the doctors with this matter. Though it could be very expensive to undergo the treatments but it is the only way that you can relieve yourself from pain. Recovery process is possible through physical therapy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and other therapy that you might need. You need the guidance of your doctor as well as your family during the recovery process.
