Runner’s knee that is also referred to as patelloformal pain or chondromalacia occurs at the time when the cartilage that is located below the surface of the knee cap that is called as patella starts to tear off resulting in pain and swelling. This layer of cartilage is responsible for lessening the amount of friction that occurs between the knee cap and the knee joint. Basically, this layer of cartilage weakens the surface below the knee cap; it is able to cause friction against the knee joint causing tremendous pain. Compared to the perennial problems of the runners’ knee that is the primary reason for affecting the young sportsperson particularly among women, the reasons for which is not so clear.
The general causes of runner’s knee are:
• The weakness or exhaustion of the quadriceps muscles or tightness in the illio tibial band.
• Quadriceps is extended forms of the knee joint that helps to track the knee cap properly and the kneecaps are required to move in up and down position that helps to ensure a smooth operation of the muscles. However, when the muscles of the leg and feet are not in proper balance, then the knees can get off the path thereby causing the cartridge to rub against the knee cap.
• The rotation of the feet to an inward position while running can also result in runner’s knee.
• Wearing running shoes that are not in proper condition can put too much of force or pressure on the runners knees and result in similar conditions. The situation can get worse if a runner takes a long break from running after the diagnosis of the disease.
The perfect way to understand about this disease is to look out for symptoms that are associated with this disease. The individuals who are suffering from this condition might have pain below or on both sides of the knee cap. In addition to this, there is a cracking sound when the knee bends that result from a possible friction of below the surface of the knee cap that rubs against the knee joint. The other symptoms comprises of a pain that is experienced while running uphill followed by a possible swelling of the knee.
The degeneration of the muscles that are caused by runner’s knee can be altered as compared to arthritis. However, the treatment will be based on the gender, age and medical history of the individual but the first thing that is to be followed by the individual s is to stop running although not forever. The other treatments may include:
• You can apply ice on the shin area.
• The patient can try to increase the strength of the quadriceps muscles through plenty of exercises such as squatting.
• The patients should try to avoid lifting weights as t will unnecessarily put more pressure on the knees.
• The legs should be kept in an elevated position and one should try to sleep with a pillow between the legs.
• There are prescription drugs or non steroidal medicines that can reduce the pain and swelling to a large extent.
