Knee pain can be classified into two categories: acute knee pain and chronic knee pain. Severe knee pain last for a short time. Generally speaking, it often results from an accident or a fall or hit during a sporting event like football for example. Under this situation, ligament damage often occurs and it usually disappears after surgery and healing. Chronic knee pain is a quite different story. This kind of pain almost goes along with you all the time and it flares up from time to time. Chronic knee pain is usually caused by the following causes. Below are the most common knee pain causes.

Arthritis is a disease which causes the discomfort of the joints in the body. osteo and rheumatoid arthritis are two types of arthritis which exert a great effect on the knee joint. They can lead to swollen, stiff, hot and immobile joints. When osteoarthritis flares up, the cartilage located in the joint suffers wear and tear. Under such two circumstances, the pain is quite likely to be chronic. It takes times for the pain to develop from flare-up to deterioration.

Tendons are a tough band of fibrous connective tissue that connects bones to bones. Ligaments are a tough band of fibrous connective tissue that connects muscles to bones. Tendonitis is inflammation, irritation, and swelling of tendons. Chronic pain is often caused by tendonitis. This is often the result of repetitive motions which exert a lot of pressure on the tendon above the knee called the patellar tendon. Professional skiers, runners and cyclists have greater chance of suffering this condition.

Bursa is a sac or saclike bodily cavity inside of the body’s joints. Bursa serves as padding between the ligaments, tendons and joints. Injuries often cause these bursa sacs to swell, which causes a condition called bursitis. When bursitis flares up, it will cause inflamed, red, and hot joints of the knee and chronic pain that can take place even when you are just sitting motionlessly.

Uric acid is a chemical that is created in the body. It is produced by a substance called purines which are contained in various foods such as shellfish, organ meats and beer and so on. Generally speaking, this uric acid is drained from the body with the urine. But occasionally, it accumulates in the system and results in a disease named gout. Gout is a disease that results from an overload of uric acid which occurs at joint locations such as the knee and results in pain. The pain produced by gout can either be gentle and steady or there can be serious attacks.

The iliotibial band, or IT band, is a thick band of fibers that begins at the pelvis and ends at the tibia. The inflammation of this band often results in a condition called iliotibial band syndrome. Long distance runners are most likely to be affected by this condition. Though IT band syndrome leads to chronic pain, it is likely to conduct full range of motion.
