At the back of our body is the spinal cord which is secured by the spinal column. This spinal cord is the foundation of our upper and lower body. Without the spinal cord, our body would look like a curled fetus because of the absence of the spinal cord. The spinal column is composed of vertebrae which form as the building blocks. Every large vertebra has in between with it a disc. Ligaments sustain the stability of the disc and vertebrae. On the part of our neck, there are seven vertebrae (cervical vertebrae). On the mid-part, there are twelve known as thoracic vertebrae. And, at the bottom, we have five lumbar vertebrae.
As stated above, between each vertebra is a disc. This disc is like a cushion which renders support to minimize any impact whenever there’s a movement lying on the spinal column. On the other hand, ligaments are like bubblegum of strong quality that holds firmly each and every bones of our body. Although, ligaments are soft tissues it can support and hold the vertebra surrounding every discs.
Before we go to another point, let’s first define herniated disc. Herniated disc or disc herniation is a reaction wherein the softer inner portion of the disc has gone to rupture outside its ring due to degeneration or injury. Most of the cases of herniated disc are seen at the fourth or fifth lumbar vertebra. This is because the lower part of our body is responsible for our sitting and standing. Another reason is that our lower back is also involved in every day movements wherever we go and whatever we do.
A person with herniated disc can feel pain differently for the reason that symptoms of herniated disc differ where the rupture occurred. Take for example, if the slipped disc is on the lower back, you may feel the pain in any part of your lower body (Ex. leg, thigh or foot). When the slipped disc is on the neck part, the pain may be felt either on your arms, hands, shoulders, or neck. Numbness is commonly felt either the herniated disc is on the neck part or on the lower back. At first, you may not even notice the pain, but afterwards—for example when you get up or sit down, during nighttime, when you cough or sneeze, or just walked a few meters away—you will then realize how painful your body is feeling.
In determining what part of your body has herniated disc, the doctor who will conduct your examination, usually look into your physical aspects and history. After determination, for example, the doctor found that you have herniated disc in neck, the doctor will check your physical status and will let you undergo some test. In curing this disorder, hours of rest and physical therapy is the normal treatment. But, for a few whose symptoms have turned into crucial, surgery is the best solution. Moreover, the lifestyle of a person during the state of therapy is always affected. More time for rest and continuous physical therapy until the disorder fades are needed.
