Many women experience chronic lower back pain. Especially prone are those women with anatomical risk factors and certain lifestyles. Women in their 30s, 40s and 50s start experiencing lower back pain because of a combination of risk factors, addressing them can go a long way towards establishing the causes for lower back pain in women and hopefully arriving at a solution to alleviate the pain.
What are some of the causes for lower back pain in women? By middle age, a woman’s bone strength, muscle elasticity and muscle tone will start to decline. The discs in her spine will become drier and less flexible, making them less able to cushion any shocks to the vertebrae. Women who do not exercise will also be more prone to having low back problems from a lack of muscle elasticity. An overweight woman will be a good candidate for back pain especially if the weight is concentrated around the mid-section. This is because the extra weight pulls the pelvis forward, creating stress on the lower back. Women carrying these extra pounds around may also experience sciatica or develop low back pain from a herniated disc or a pinched nerve which is caused by her compensating for the extra weight. Keeping a healthy weight through a good diet and exercise regimen can help a woman avoid certain types of back problems in her future. An overweight and obese woman will face a higher risk of developing osteoarthritis, as they grow older.
A sedentary lifestyle can also be one of the causes for lower back pain in women.
Women who do not exercise can develop or worsen an existing back pain condition back pain because of increased stiffness and weakened muscles. There are benefits to be reaped from regular physical activity including the nourishment of the spinal discs, the soft tissues and ligaments. No exercise can cause the discs to become malnourished and degenerate. It can never be overemphasized that doing strengthening exercises for the muscles of the back and abdomen can help provide women with better support for their spine. The more gentle forms of exercise, such as yoga, Pilates, water therapy, riding a stationary bike or walking, are especially helpful for women.
The sitting in the wrong way for long periods of time, especially for women who work, can also be one of the major causes for lower back pain in women. Sitting forward or slouching down in a chair can overstretch the spinal ligaments and strain the discs and surrounding structures in the spine. Over time, incorrect sitting posture and poor work place ergonomics can contribute to recurrent episodes or cause lower back pain in women.
Women who smoke are also more likely to develop low back pain than non-smokers.
This is because the nicotine in cigarette smoke thickens the walls of the blood vessels. Thus restricting the blood flow through the large and small blood vessels of the lower back and increases the amount of time for healing and recovery if you ever have a back injury.
